At the center of Old Town Clovis, sits this six-acre lot turned 35,000 sq ft Senior Activity Center, Transit Center, and Public Library. The Landmark Square project brings together the County of Fresno with the City of Clovis and was designed with sustainability, inclusion, and longevity in mind. The Senior Activity Center was completed in Summer 2022 as the first of many project phases. A key element in achieving this project design was the use of long-lasting and energy-efficient metal roofing.
One of the main advantages of metal roofing is its long lifespan. Longevity was an important factor for this project as it was designed to be a long-term investment in the community. The roofing system chosen for this first phase was AEP Span’s SpanSeam™ architectural metal roof system. SpanSeam is a performance-rated, mechanically seamed roof system featuring a 16” width spanning between the 2” high ribs.
The 2” ribs provide clean bold line aesthetics to the roof as well as a weather-tight design with its 180-degree seam. Unlike a directly fastened standing seam profile, SpanSeam requires a clip to fasten the panels down. The panels were fastened using a two-piece clip assembly to help manage thermal movement. Due to the large roof area and the Clovis climate, designing with thermal movement in mind was a key consideration.
To ensure long-lasting protection and aid in the sustainability design element, a 22ga thickness in ZINCALUME® Plus coated metal was selected for the finish. The aluminum-zinc coating of ZINCALUME offers two to four times the
corrosion resistance of regular galvanized products while also being energy-efficient. ZINCALUME Plus has a Solar Reflective Index of 61 which helps to reflect infrared heat and in turn, reduce the amount of energy required to cool the building during the hot summer months. This first phase of the Landmark Square project is a great example of the benefits of using standing seam metal roofing for commercial projects. The metal roofing provides both functional and aesthetic benefits while also offering cost savings over the long-term. Contrasting with other roofing materials that require periodic replacement, the community of Clovis will be able to enjoy these new structures for several decades with minimal maintenance.
