Eric Glass, AIA, LEED AP, principal at Glass Architects, says metal siding and roofing products were a natural choice for the Special Waste Collection Center. Glass says metal’s inherent durability and recycled content speaks to the facility’s mission. “The horizontal and vertical fluted siding creates a strong form and texture, enhancing the building’s character,” he explains.
The project utilized AEP Span’s 24-gauge Reverse Box Rib™ in ZACtique II on a lower section of the wall, 24-gauge HR-36 in Metallic Silver on the upper wall and canopy and 24-gauge Prestige Series in Metallic Silver for the soffit. Additionally, AEP Span supplied 16-inch, 24-gauge SpanSeam in Hemlock Green for the roof and 24-gauge Curved Select Seam in Hemlock Green for the curved canopy. The $4.6 million, LEED Gold-certified center uses solar power and opened in April 2014.
Glass says the project was designed to revitalize a contaminated site and turn it into a protected habitat. “With the Elk Grove Special Waste Collection Center project we wanted to express and celebrate the industrial chic nature of dealing with hazardous waste products at the same time creating a safe, warm and comfortable environment for the center staff,” he says.
